Konica Minolta LS-150 Spot Luminance Meter

The Konica Minolta LS-150 and LS-160 are portable, non-contact, spot luminance meters with a a 1° and 1/3° field-of-view respectively and convenient SLR reflex viewing optics for targeting of the measurement spot. They are our least expensive, portable photometers for display and sign measurements and report brightness (luminance) in cd/m2. The LS-150/160 replace the previous-generation LS-100 and LS-110 and offer an enhanced spectral match to the CIE standard photopic observer function for improved measurement accuracy.

Spot measurement of luminance in a portable instrument

The LS-150 and LS-160 are lightweight, compact and battery powered luminance meters for the measurement of a wide range of luminance conditions and non-contact measurement of reflectance. A successor to the LS-100/110, the new instruments offer improved features and usability. These next generation instruments provide an increased measurement range and a sensor that more closely matches the CIE photopic observer function.

To provide the most accurate measurement of luminance, the relative spectral response of the measuring instrument should perfectly match the sensitivity of the human eye for photopic vision, as represented by the CIE spectral luminous efficiency V(λ). Alongside improved usability, the LS-150 and LS-160 feature an improved correlation to V(λ) and a greatly improved measurement range up to 999,900 cd/m2 (LS-150) and 9,999,000 cd/m2 (LS-160).

The LS-150 and LS-160 feature the same user-friendly features as the popular LS-100/110:

  • SLR (single lens reflex) optical system and pistol grip design gives the operator precise control over targeting and ensures that the viewfinder shows the exact area to be measured, even at very short distances.
  • The measured luminance value is displayed inside the viewfinder whilst full measurement data is shown on the large external monochrome display.
  • The optical system is virtually flare-free, eliminating the influence of light from outside the measurement area.
  • Areas as small as 0.4mm diameter (LS-160) can be measured when using the optional close-up lenses (for information on measurement areas please refer to the LS-150/160 brochure).
  • The result is a truly next generation measuring instrument, both accurate and user friendly. The LS-150 also satisfies the criteria for DIN 5032-7 Class B.

Main Features

Lightweight and portable: the battery powered LS-150/160 weights just 850g (excluding batteries) and comes in a hard case for easy transportation.

SLR (single-lens-reflex) optical system: this ensures that there is no difference between the area indicated in the viewfinder and the actual measurement area.

Spot measurement for small target areas: the 1° acceptance angle of the LS-150 can measure areas with a diameter as small as 14.4 mm (at a distance of 1,014 mm); using the optional close-up lens, this can be reduced to diameters as small as 1.3 mm (at a distance of 205 mm). The 1/3° acceptance angle of the LS-160 can measure areas with a diameter as small as 0.4 mm (with close-up lens 110 attached).

Data memory for 1000 measurements: with USB 2.0 communication, you can connect with a PC to send measurement data and receive control signals. The instrument can also be powered by USB cable, ideal for use in measuring rigs or when working with a PC/tablet computer. Data-management software CS-S20w is included as a standard accessory

10 user calibration channels: the LS-150/160 can be calibrated to a user reference light source which can be used to further reduce errors and improve inter-instrument agreement when using multiple devices.

Areas of Application

Besides the measurement of absolute values, the instrument can also display values relative to a defined standard (target). That way differences in brightness on large surfaces or similar items can be quickly ascertained.

The LS-150/160 can measure the luminance values for all types of light sources including signal and traffic lights, airport runway lighting, lamps, LEDs and so on. The wide measurement range of 0.01 cd/m2 to 999,900 cd/m2 (LS-160 0.1 cd/m2 to 9,999,000 cd/m2) and adjustable integration time ensures that the LS-150 or LS-160 can be used for most luminance applications.
