Labsphere Illumia Pro 3 LM-85 Integrating Sphere Spectroradiometer

The Labsphere Illumia Pro 3 LM-85 integrating sphere spectroradiometer is purpose designed for measuring the photometric, colorimetric, thermal and electrical performance of LEDs and LED modules over a temperature range of 15-85°C in conformance with IES LM-85. A 0.5m diameter integrating sphere is offered. The intensity, colour and life expectancy of an LED or LED-based luminaire vary greatly both with drive current and junction temperature. By measuring the performance characteristics of the LED over a range of drive levels and temperatures, one can model the expected light output and life expectancy.

Labsphere Illumia Pro 3 LM-85 Integrating Sphere Spectroradiometer

The Labsphere Illumia Pro 3 LM-85 integrating sphere spectroradiometer is purpose designed for measuring the photometric, colorimetric, thermal and electrical performance of LEDs and LED modules over a temperature range of 15-85°C in conformance with IES LM-85. A 0.5m diameter integrating sphere is offered. The intensity, colour and life expectancy of an LED or LED-based luminaire vary greatly both with drive current and junction temperature. By measuring the performance characteristics of the LED over a range of drive levels and temperatures, one can model the expected light output and life expectancy.

Illumia Pro 3 provides for automated thermal, optical and electrical characterization of LEDs and LED modules. Integral® software allows users to measure the optical and thermal characteristics of various LEDs and arrays quickly, accurately, and simultaneously. Each system includes a thermoelectric cooling stage for temperature control and monitoring. With an included source meter, the Illumia Pro 3 enables full current, voltage, and temperature sweeping – reporting luminous flux at your required intervals.

Testing in accordance with LM-85 can be made in single pulse mode, continuous pulse mode and in DC mode.

Advanced Sphere Design

Measurement of total luminous flux are performed with Illumia Pro 3 in a 2π geometry as standard, with a 4π kit available as an option. Electronic modules increase functionality and simplify compliance with IES LM-85-20. It goes without saying that all Illumia sphere systems incorporate auxiliary correction to compensate for the self-absorption of the device under (DUT) test placed within the sphere or at the sphere port. Without this essential option, measurements of luminous flux and chromaticity would suffer from errors easily running into the many tens of percent.

Illumia Pro 3 sphere systems comprise the following main modules:

  • Illumia Pro 3 integrating sphere with 0.5m diameter.
  • 2π measurement and calibration lamp fixtures.
  • CDS-800 spectrometer (see “Spectrometer” tab above for details).
  • A standard of 2π spectral radiant flux, calibrated in Labsphere’s ISO 17025 NVLAP-accredited laboratory using standards that are directly traceable to NIST. You maintain your own sphere calibrations, eliminating problems of long-term calibration drift and avoiding the expense and down-time of needing to ship your sphere back to the vendor.
  • Auxiliary correction fitted as standard.
  • Integral® software (see “Integral Software” tab above for details).
  • Thermoelectric (TEC) temperature controlled mounting plate for the device under test.
  • Source meter.

IES LM-85-20 Testing

The photometric measurement of high-power LEDs can be difficult because they are highly sensitive to thermal operating conditions. LED manufacturers normally use pulse operation, however, high power LEDs in actual lighting products are operating in DC mode and at much higher temperatures where their photometric and colorimetric values tend to deviate significantly
from those at the room temperature condition. To assist users, LED manufacturers make efforts to provide data on thermal characteristics for higher operating temperatures; however, because LEDs are usually binned by LED manufacturers for their optical and electrical characteristics at Tj equal to 25 °C, manufacturer data for higher operating temperatures is of limited use. To address the issue LM-85 was created to provide reproducible measurement methods of LEDs at a given junction temperature in pulse or DC mode and provides the grounds for the specification of LEDs at high-temperature conditions.

LM-85 describes the procedures to be followed and precautions to be observed in performing accurate measurements of total luminous flux, total radiant flux (optical power), total photon flux, electrical power, luminous efficacy, colour quantities, and wavelength characteristics of high-power LEDs, including white LEDs and single-color LEDs. It covers LED packages, including those with multiple chips and remote phosphor LED packages. It also covers LED arrays or modules including remote-phosphor LED arrays or modules. Illumia Pro 3 guides users through LM-85 stabilisation, electrical, optical, and thermal control for pulse operation as well as steady DC operation of LEDs

High Performance Spectrometer

Illumia Pro 3 is configured with the CDS-800 spectrometer that provides for measurements over the range 350-1000nm. Both hardware and software triggers are provided for fully automated thermal, electrical and optical testing of LEDs and SSL. Integral® System Software

Labsphere’s Integral® software drives the Illumia Pro 3 system, allowing you to operate your spectroradiometer from any device at any location and in multiple languages. Automated calibration routines with built in DUT stabilisation are featured which meet IES and EN measurement methods. Integral software also communicates with third party power supplies (AC & DC) as well as power meters, temperature monitors and temperature controllers. Labsphere Spectrometer

The Labsphere Illumia Pro 3 integrating sphere spectroradiometer system is configured with a high speed CDS-800 CCD array spectrometer controlled from Labsphere’s Integral® software. The CDS-800 provides a broadband sensitivity over the range from 350-1000nm. The CDS-800 also features hardware and software triggering capabilities.

Labsphere Integral Software

Labsphere’s Integral® software drives the Illumia Pro 3 sphere system, allowing you to operate your spectroradiometer from any device at any location and in multiple languages. Automated calibration routines with built in stabilisation are featured which meet IES and EN measurement methods. Integral software also communicates with third party power supplies (AC & DC) as well as power meters, temperature monitors and the TEC temperature controlled mounting plate for the device under test (DUT). Integral redefines the way light is measured and revolutionizes how lighting measurements and control are synthesised into useful information. The innovative HTML5-based application software is for general lighting measurement control, test and reporting. The Application Program Interface (API) options were developed to work with your existing business software and product line integration.
