Photometers & Colorimeters

Photometers measure the “power” of visible light emitted from a light source, scaled to the standard CIE photopic observer function. Luminance photometers are often called “spot meters” because they measure the brightness of a spot on a light source or display, whereas the popular name given to meters that measure illuminance is “lux meter”. Tristimulus versions of our photometers tell you the colour (CIE chromaticity and correlated colour temperature, CCT in Kelvin) of the light source. A flicker photometer is a specialised high speed illuminance meter that detects hazardous temporal variations in light output. Pro-Lite stocks a number of instruments that are available for short-term hire.

A spectroradiometer can also be used for illuminance and luminance measurements. Luminance and illuminance measurements can also be performed using an imaging photometer or colorimeter.
