Germanium Photodiodes
Germanium photodiodes are commonly used to measure optical power in the NIR range, especially in cost-sensitive applications or where a large-area detector is needed. However, germanium detectors have a lower shunt resistance and higher dark current than similarly-sized InGaAs detectors, resulting in higher noise levels overall. Therefore, germanium detectors are well suited for applications where the signal being detected is much higher than the noise floor. GPD Optoelectronics offers an “HS” series of germanium photodiodes which have higher-than-typical shunt resistance for improved performance
InGaAs Photodiodes
Indium gallium arsenide photodiodes are commonly used to detect wavelengths in the NIR range. The benefits of using InGaAs are that it has much higher shunt resistance and lower dark current than germanium, making it ideal for sensitive measurements and other low-noise applications.
Our standard product line offers chip active diameters from 500 μm to 10000 μm, spectral response from 850 nm to 1700 nm, available with photodiodes up to 2.6 nm, High shunt resistance for high sensitivity, Multiple lens and window options, Thermoelectric cooling options. Typical applications include NIR Sensing/Radiometry, LED/LD Characterization, Spectroscopy, Medical Diagnostics, Telcom/Datacom Power Monitoring,
High Speed InGaAs
For applications requiring fast response our high speed InGaAs photodiodes offer low capacitance for speeds up to 2.5GHz (depending on package)Chip diameters from 60 μm to 300 μm, Spectral response from 850 nm to 1700 nm, Low dark current for high sensitivity, along with a range of packaging options: TO packages, fiber pigtails, chip on ceramic submount, and more. Typical applications for Hogh speed InGaAs photodiodes include Optical communication, Time-resolved fluorescence measurements, LED/LD temporal characterization, LiDAR, Free Space Optics (FSO).
Extended InGaAs Photodiodes
Extended InGaAs photodiodes feature extended cutoff wavelengths (1.9μm, 2.05μm, 2.2μm and 2.6μm) for applications requiring a wider spectral range coverage and are ideal for applications such as Gas sensing, hydrocarbon sensing, Flame and spark detection, FTIR, Spectroscopy, SWIR photodetection. Chip active diameters from 0.3 mm to 3 mm, Multiple window and lens options, Packages (TO-46, TO-18 or TO-5), Thermoelectric cooled options are available.

Feature | Description |
Mounting Configurations | TO PACKAGES: A wide variety of TO packages are available. Selection is based on the size of the photodiode and the pinout requirements of your application. CHIP ON CERAMIC SUBMOUNT: GPD offers a variety of standard ceramics and can also design a ceramic unique to your application. Chips can be bonded with epoxy or eutectic solder. |
Fiber Coupling | Many applications require high-speed photodiodes or APDs to be coupled into single-mode or multi-mode optical fibers. GPD is able to work with a variety of fibers and can add most standard connectors to provide a high-quality, reliable device. |
Windows and Lenses | Many of the GPD photodiode packages come standard with a glass or sapphire window. Additionally, GPD can provide custom windows best suited for your application. Lenses can be added to many TO packages if a larger field of view is required for increased detection. In some cases, lenses can also be added directly to the photodiode or APD chip. |
Filters and Coatings
| When the light incident on your detector needs to be manipulated, the best course of action may be to apply a coating or filter specific to your application. For maximum signal, AR coatings can be applied to one or both sides of windows, and also to the photodiode chip itself. Band-pass or long-pass filters can be applied to windows to tailor the working wavelength range of the detector system. In high-power scenarios, partially reflective coatings can attenuate optical power to a manageable level. Where reflections are undesirable, absorptive filters can often be used for attenuation in place of a traditional glass window. |
Thermoelectric Cooling
| In noise-sensitive applications, many customers cool their photodiodes to reduce thermal noise and get the best performance. GPD Optoelectronics offers single- and dual-stage thermoelectric coolers built into TO packages with the photodiodes. |
