Labsphere UV3000S Sunscreen SPF Tester

UV3000S Sunscreen SPF Tester - the New Standard for In-Vitro Testing

The Labsphere UV3000S sunscreen SPF tester sets the new standard for in-vitro measurement of the performance of cosmetics and sunscreen formulations. The UV3000S is a dedicated spectrophotometer which instantaneously measures UV and blue transmittance from 290-500nm and computes all relevant sunscreen SPF, UVAPF and HEVIS sun protection factors. Compared to the previous generation UV-2000S, the UV-3000S provides an enhanced absorbance sensitivity of 3AU, suitable for testing “very high” formulations of SPF 50+ in full compliance with all of the latest international sunscreen testing standards, including ISO 23675, ISO 23698, ISO 24443, FDA 2012, as well as COLIPA and the Boots Star Rating guidelines. Best of all, the UV3000S is even faster and simpler to use, with a full sample study being able to be completed in just a few minutes.

The Need for Speed

The UV3000S flash technology saves time and money when bringing new products to market. The UV3000S rapidly measures the diffuse transmittance of sunscreen samples in the ultraviolet wavelength region from 290 – 450nm and High Energy Visible (HEV) blue light from 400 – 500nm. Labsphere’s Spectralon® integrating sphere incorporates a re-optimised xenon flashlamp to provide exceptional diffuse illumination of the product sample and minimise data integration time.

Sunscreen measurements are highly dependent upon a consistent sample thickness, so to reduce errors, the absorbance is averaged from multiple locations on a number of sample slides. With the UV3000S, each measurement location takes under a second to scan, with a sample slide taking less then a minute overall. Averaging multiple test slides can therefore be accomplished in just a few minutes, which is an order of magnitude faster than competing instruments.

The UV3000S also incorporates new high performance diode array spectrometers coupled by advanced fiber optics that are optimised at the system level for low stray light with superior wavelength stability and flash-to-flash repeatability.

Comparing the Labsphere UV3000S to the Previous Generation UV-2000S

The Labsphere UV3000S builds upon the foundation laid by the UV-2000S, offering a broader wavelength range and additional testing capabilities. The UV3000S is suitable for both cosmetics and sun care products, extending its utility beyond traditional SPF analysis. Key differences are:

  • Wavelength Range: 290 to 500nm (UV3000S) versus 250-450nm (UV-2000S)
  • Dynamic Range: 0-3.0A (UV3000S) versus 0-2.7A (UV-2000S)
  • Applications: extended capabilities for UV SPF and hyperpigmentation HEVIS testing
  • Advanced Features: the UV3000S includes an optional, automated sample stage, plus extended test capabilities, and a more robust industrial design

Powerful Applications Software

The UV3000S software is extremely easy to operate, with simple menus guiding the operator through industry test methods. The built-in reporting functions generate essential information analysis and industry standard reporting formats. Reports include necessary information such as date, time, operator name, sample identification, and test parameters. Reports are conveniently viewed on your PC, printed, or can be exported to data processing software for further review and analysis.

Developed with .NET Framework® , the Windows® 11 compatible software facilitates capture/archival/ retrieval and export of all data including bare substrate data that may impact UVA-PF due to surface roughness. UV3000S application software includes an integrated Performance Validation Routine that allows for on-site validation and re-validation to ensure optimum instrument performance. A set of calibrated standards, including a wavelength standard that captures six relevant spectral bands, is included with each UV3000S.
