Pre-configured spectrometer for absorbance spectroscopyAvantes Bundles

This Avantes spectrometer bundle measures absorbance from 200-1100nm. This bundle includes a dual high power deuterium/halogen light source and a variable dip sampling probe for measuring fluids.

Typically, UV/VIS absorbance systems consist of a spectrometer, a stabilised light source and an optical fibre which are connected to some form of sampling accessory.

Designed for broadband measurements of absorbance in fluids, this UV/VIS absorbance bundle offered by Avantes includes the AvaSpec-ULS2048CL-EVO spectrometer configured for analysis between 200-1100nm, the AvaLight-DH-S-BAL high-power deuterium halogen light source (200-2500nm) with an integrated shutter for the auto-save-dark-option, and the FDP-7UVIR200-VAR variable path dip probe.

Optional Accessories

Every application is unique, and your measurement might require a different configuration. That is when a fibre optic spectrometer and a modular system is an advantage. With optional Avantes accessories, you can adapt your spectrometer system to your needs and not the other way around.

The standard filter holder on the AvaLight-DH-S-BAL light source can be easily replaced by a direct-attach cuvette holder CUV-DA-DHS to enable direct coupling of the cuvette cell holder to the front plate of the light source. This minimises the use of fiber-optics.

For in-line absorbance or fluorescence measurements, Avantes also offers in-line flow cells. They are available with different diameters and for different temperature and pressure conditions. They include two UV/VIS/NIR collimating lenses.

Pre-configured spectrometer for fibre optic reflectance spectroscopy

The Avantes FORS spectrometer bundle employs a fibre optically coupled spectrometer configured for non-invasively measuring the diffuse reflectance spectrum of objects of cultural heritage in the UV-VIS-NIR band, between 360 and 2500nm.

FORS (Fibre Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy) is an established technique for the non-invasive analysis of cultural heritage and art objects (see Note 1). Particularly suitable for the study of those objects that do not allow sampling, the study of the diffuse reflectance spectrum between 360 and 2500nm helps to identify raw materials.

Pro-Lite offers an Avantes spectrometer for this challenging application that respects the demanding conservation standards. This is a multichannel system based on the AvaSpec-ULS2048CL-EVO-RS spectrometer for the 360-1100nm band and the AvaSpec-NIR512-2.5-HSC-EVO-RS spectrometer for the 1000-2500nm band, with a minimum spectral resolution of 1nm in the visible range and 8.9nm in the NIR.

The bundle includes the FCR-19UVIR200-2-BX reflection probe  that provides for contactless measurements with a 3.5mm diameter beam spot holding the probe tip at 5mm from the surface, to investigate even the smallest details on art works. Avantes also offers an optional tripod, the AvaTripod, and the small stand, the Thin Film-Stage, to hold the probe at a fixed distance and to adjust its position to obtain the best signal.

The AvaLight-HAL-S-Mini tungsten halogen light source (360-2500nm) has all the specifications required to perform the measurements within the advised conservation thresholds values (see Note 2). It has no UV contribution and the power density measured for a beam spot of 3.5 mm is 5mW/cm2, below the conservation threshold value of 25mW/cm2. With the light source attenuator ATT-DA-HAL-MINI, the output of the AvaLight-HAL-S-Mini can be controlled between 0 and 100%, according to the conservation requirements.

The system is supplied with Avantes’ AvaSoftX-ALL software. Not only is the acquisition operation easily controlled but the colour change or fading processes can be monitored with the AvaSoftX-COLOUR software module for colour measurements. Finally, the latest update of the software includes a tool that automatically calculates derivatives, which helps in the identification of organic and inorganic pigments (see Note 3).

Avantes Bundles

This Avantes spectrometer package non-invasively measures concentrations or changes in concentration over time. Typical applications include oxygen in blood, haemoglobin and microvascular circulation.

Spectroscopy is the basis of many non-invasive measurement devices applied in biomedical applications, such as the detection of oxygen, haemoglobin, cytochrome and water concentration in tissues and the venous bodily systems. Pro-Lite offers an Avantes spectrometer bundle to non-invasively measure the optical response of molecules, such as oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin, through biological tissues in R&D projects.

The package includes the AvaSpec-ULS2048CL-EVO spectrometer configurated for the spectral range between 500-1000nm, to investigate the first biological window, where light penetrates tissues without being affected by the intense absorption of haemoglobin and water.

It also features the AvaLight-HAL-S-MINI halogen light source (360-2500nm) and the FCR-7UVIR200-2-MS-PK-S, a reflection probe with a silicone metal jacketing recommended for waterproof biomedical applications and a PEEK jacketing for the best chemical resistance. Finally, the AvaSoftX software is implemented with the AvasoftX-Chem module for the real-time measurement of concentrations.

Pre-configured spectrometer for colour measurements

Avantes Bundles

Reflected colour is measured in the visible band, 380-780nm. Measurements are made in either a directional geometry using a fibre probe, or hemispherically using an integrating sphere.

Compared with measuring the colour of a light source, the colour appearance of an object is affected by the colour (or spectral power) of the light that is illuminating the object. This is the same phenomenon as the colour rendering of a light source. So when measuring the colour of an object, it is important to eliminate from the readings the effect of the colour of the illumination. To that end, colorimetric measurements are made with reference to a certified white reflectance standard.

This pre-configured colorimetry spectrometer bundle from Avantes is based around the AvaSpec-ULS -2048CL-EVO spectrometer which is configured for the visible wavelength range. The sampling optics used are either the FCR-7UVIR200-2 reflection probe (for directional reflectance measurements) or the AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V integrating sphere, according to the context of the measurement. In either case, an Illuminant A tungsten halogen light source illuminates the sample’s surface.

The integrating sphere employs diffuse illumination with directional collection from a 10mm sample port.

This light source is built into the integrating sphere, whereas for the reflectance probe, a separate AvaLight-HAL-S-MINI fibre-coupled light source is used. Finally, the WS-2 white reflectance standard tile is included for calibration of the system. The AvaSoftX-Full with the AvaSoftX-Colour module return the colour values in terms of CIE 1976 L*a*b* colour coordinates, along with other parameters, such as Hue, Chroma and the CIE XYZ tristimulus values.

Pre-configured spectrometer for fluorescence measurements

Avantes Bundles

Fluorescence is a relatively weak phenomenon, so requires a more sensitive spectrometer. The Avantes fluorescence spectrometer package covers the 350-1100nm range and employs LED sources for excitation at the desired wavelengths.

In spectroscopy, fluorescence measurements are one of the more challenging applications due to the low intensity of the fluorescent emission (typically about 3% of the excitation signal). The Avantes fluorescence spectroscopy bundle is an affordable package designed to perform fluorescence measurements with excellent results. It includes the AvaSpec-ULS2048CL-EVO spectrometer, configured to measure in the wavelength range between 300-1100nm, an AvaLight-LED series light source, and the FCR-UVIR 200/600-2-IND fibre optic reflection probe.

The narrow emission band of the AvaLight-LED reduces the possible overlap of the excitation and the emission bands in the fluorescence spectrum. AvaLight LEDs are available with emissions at 355, 380, 400, 410, 430, 450, 470, 530, 590 and 780 nm.

The FCR-UVIR 200/600-2-IND is a specially designed reflection probe, which hosts the FCR-FLTIP-IND reflective accessory at its end. It prevents ambient light from entering the probe and provides for backscattering of the excitation light, increasing the collection efficiency of the typically low fluorescence signal.

Optional Accessories

Every application is unique, and your measurement might require a different configuration. That is when a fibre optic spectrometer and a modular system is a distinct advantage. The available Avantes accessories can adapt your system configuration to your need and not the other way around.
Instead of the immersion probe FCR-UVIR200/600-2-IND, a direct-attach cuvette holder CUV-DA can be coupled to the AvaLight-LED. Another possibility is to use a broadband source in combination with a bandpass filter. The AvaLight-DH-S features a filter holder for filters measuring up to 50 x 50 x 5.0mm.

The fluorescence cuvette holder CUV-FL-UV/VIS ensures that the optical paths of the excitation emission and the fluorescence are perpendicular, so that the first will not be detected by the spectrometer and swamp the fluorescence signal.

For in-line fluorescence measurements, Avantes also offers in-line flow cells. They are available with different diameters and for different temperature and pressure conditions. They include two UV/VIS/NIR collimating lenses.

Pre-configured spectrometer for measuring the colour of gemstones

Avantes Bundles

The Avantes gemmology colour measurement bundle includes an AvaSpec-ULS2048CL-EVO spectrometer configured with a 360-1000nm spectral range, and an optical fibre with integrating sphere collection optics that provides for total hemispheric illumination of the sample. The spectrometer can easily detect counterfeit gemstones.

The two basic questions that gemmologists aim to answer are “what are the features of this gemstone?” and “are these features natural?”.

An easy way to answer these questions is to use the Avantes gemmology spectrometer bundle. It consists of an AvaSpec-ULS2048-CL-EVO spectrometer, an FCR-7UV200-2-BX optical fibre, an AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL reflectance integrating sphere with integral tungsten halogen illumination, and a WS-2-GEM, white reference tile for gemmology.

The WS-2 is designed to hold the gemstone in the middle of the tile with the integrating sphere over it. It facilitates the positioning and cooling of a gemstone with liquid nitrogen, as it features a cavity and hole in the middle of the tile

Pre-configured spectrometer for spectral irradiance measurements

Avantes Bundles

The Avantes irradiance spectrometer package measures spectral irradiance from 200-1100nm. Irradiance is the radiant flux received at a surface per unit area (units of W/m2). A fibre optic input is equipped with a cosine diffuser.

Irradiance is the radiant flux received at a surface per unit area. A simple radiometer allows you to measure irradiance, but it will only return the value of the total irradiance integrated over the wavelength range for which it is sensitive. A radiometer gives meaningful data for monochromatic light sources, or for light sources with defined spectral response functions (e.g. UVA, UVB, UVC, blue light phototherapy lamps) for which the radiometer has been calibrated.

However, for broadband (“polychromatic”) sources or sources where the spectral power distribution is unknown, or where you need to know the irradiance as a function of wavelength, then a spectroradiometer is required. An Avantes spectrometer with appropriate collection optics and a certified, traceable calibration becomes a spectroradiometer.

The Avantes spectrometer bundle for irradiance measurements is based upon the AvaSpec-ULS-2048CL-EVO spectrometer which is connected via an optical fibre to the CC-VIS/NIR cosine diffuser, with a known surface area. The entire system is calibrated with reference to a NIST-traceable source of spectral irradiance. Thanks to the FC/PC connection between the spectrometer and the optical fibre, the integrity of the calibration is maintained even if disconnection and reinsertion of the optical fibre is necessary, for example for transportation.

The comprehensive AvaSoftX-IRRAD software allows you to perform fully calibrated, traceable, radiometric and spectroradiometric measurements.

The Avantes irradiance spectrometer system will report spectroradiometric, radiometric, photometric and colorimetric properties, including those shown in the list to the right. All parameters can also be reported in temporal mode (parameter versus time).

Optional Solarisation of Optical Fibre for Deep UV Measurements

When standard silica fibre optics are used to transmit light below 230nm, they are damaged and develop an absorption band at 215nm which compromises the efficiency in transmitting the light and invalidating the factory calibration. For this reason, if the spectral range of interest of the irradiance measurement is below 215nm, it is advised to use an optional solarisation-resistant optical fibre.

Pre-configured spectrometer for measurements of LED flux & colour

Avantes Bundles

The Avantes LED measurement spectrometer bundle employs an integrating sphere for measurements of luminous flux, irradiance, illuminance, colour, colour rendering and intensity in the range 350-1000nm.

LEDs have become the dominant lighting technology but their output varies enormously from unit to unit, and from batch to batch. Furthermore, the colour and brightness of an LED will change significantly when installed in a lighting product, differences arising from changes in thermal mass and heat-sinking, and from the reflective and transmissive optics used to shape the output of the LED module or luminaire. Therefore, the spectroradiometric measurements of LEDs is of the utmost importance both for incoming QA but also for performance verification of the finished product.

The Avantes bundle for LED measurements is based on the AvaSpec-ULS-2048CL-EVO spectrometer that is configured for the spectral range 350-1000nm, an FC-UVIR600-2-ME-FC/SMA optical fibre, and the AvaSphere-50-IRRAD integrating sphere. The complete system is factory calibrated with reference to a NIST-traceable calibration source. The AvaSoftX-IRRAD software module included in the bundle provides for measurements of spectroradiometric, radiometric, photometric and colorimetric properties, including the parameters listed to the right. All parameters can also be reported in temporal mode (parameter versus time).

Pre-configured spectrometers for optical emission spectroscopy

Avantes offers multi-channel (4 & 8 channel) spectrometer bundles with an ultra-high resolution of up to 0.09nm in the wavelength range 200-960nm for measuring broadband plasma emissions by optical emission spectroscopy.

Plasma applications require high-resolution spectra and high-speed data acquisition. To that end, Avantes offer two spectrometer bundles for plasma measurements, one for high resolution and the other for ultra high resolution measurements. Both feature a multichannel spectrometer enclosed in a desktop housing or rack-mount enclosure, a multifurcate fibre optic bundle and the Specline© analytical software for easy identification of atoms, ions and molecules. The Specline software facilitates analysis of the spectral data imported directly from Avantes’ AvaSoftX spectroscopy software.

High Resolution Plasma Measurement Bundle

The Avantes high resolution plasma measurement bundle is a 200-960nm quad-channel spectrometer system that boasts an optical resolution of between 0.22 and 0.28nm, which is four times better than a standard AvaSpec-ULS-2048CL-EVO spectrometer covering the same spectral range. The four channels are seamlessly combined in the AvaSoftX software.

Ultra-High Resolution Plasma Measurement Bundle

For an even higher resolution over the same spectral range as the quad-channel spectrometer described above, the ultra-high resolution bundle features eight channels to achieve an optical resolution of up to 0.09 nm.

Pre-configured spectrometer for thin film thickness measurements

Avantes Bundles

This Avantes spectrometer bundle is for single layer thin film measurements, and comes complete with a light source, a reflection probe, a fixturing stage and a standard all included. Thin films from 0.01 to 50µm thickness can be measured with a resolution of 1nm, in the wavelength range 200-1100nm.

The measurement of thin films finds interest in the semiconductor industry, energy/solar industry, and in the coating industry. The thickness of a thin film or a coating layer is determined by measuring broadband, white light being reflected by the coating surface and by the interface between the substrate and the coating itself. The reflections form a characteristic interference pattern from which the optical thickness is calculated.

The Avantes bundle for thin film measurements makes this measurement and analysis quick and easy, from the data acquisition to the data processing. It includes the AvaSpec-ULS2048-EVO spectrometer, the AvaLight-DHc deuterium-halogen light source, the FCR-7UV200-2-ME fibre optic reflection probe and the Avantes thin film stage. The AvaSoftX THIN FILM software module supports single layer measurements of thin films ranging from 10nm to 50μm thickness with 1nm resolution and returns the thickness value together with a fit quality value. The bundle also comes complete with a thin film reference standard which provides samples of uncoated and coated substrates for validation purposes.

Optional, Higher Power Light Source for Diffusely Reflecting Surfaces

For most specular surfaces in the UV the standard AvaLight-DHc compact deuterium-halogen light source is adequate, but for more diffusely coated surfaces, the higher power AvaLight-DH-S is recommended.

UVC spectrometer for monitoring UV germicidal irradiation (UVGI) dose

Avantes Bundles

This Avantes spectrometer bundle measures the spectral irradiance and checks the dose in the UVC of germicidal lamps used for ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) sterilisation of surfaces, air and water.

Only UVC radiation (200-280nm) has a germicidal effect and to monitor the actual efficacy of germicidal lamps used for disinfection, we offer the Avantes spectrometer AvaSpec ULS 2048. This not only measures the irradiance of the UV light source but also provides the spectral power distribution of the lamp emission, reporting irradiance as a function of wavelength. Spectroradiometric measurements of this kind allow you to monitor both the absolute irradiance and germicidal dose as well as the efficacy of the lamp relative to the action spectrum of the bacteria or virus.

The ideal spectrometer for this application is the AvaSpec ULS 2048 configurated for the range between 200-400nm with partial deep UV (>150 nm) coatings applied to the CCD sensor and an order-sorting coating with long-pass filter at 300nm. The UVC spectrometer package is supplied with appropriate accessories appropriate for deep UV measurements, such as a solarization-resistant optical fibre and a cosine corrector for the UV/VIS. The AvaSoftX – Irrad absolute irradiance module of the Avantes AvaSoftX software is bundled.

The AvaSpec ULS 2048 is part of the modular familiy of Avantes spectromerers and allows you to perform fully calibrated, traceable radiometric measurements in the UVC, UVB and UVA bands, 200-400nm. You can also upgrade your system for reflectance, transmittance and absorbance measurements as your needs change in the future.

Pre-configured spectrometer for coating measurements in vacuum

Avantes Bundles

Avantes offers a spectrometer bundle configured for reflectance measurements in the 200-1100nm band within a vacuum chamber for monitoring thin film coatings and plasmas. The vacuum bundle includes vacuum feed-throughs.

Layer thickness, composition, surface finish, light transmission, reflectance and polarisation are some of the important parameters that need to be monitored during a vacuum coating process. They all are facilitated by spectroscopy and spectroscopic interferometry. Fibre optics provide a versatile tool to measure in a remote vacuum and within cleanroom chambers.

To allow measurements in vacuum chambers, Avantes offers a bundle that includes an AvaLight-DH-S-BAL light source, whose emission is delivered through an FC-UVIR600-2-ME optical fibre connected to a vacuum feed-through to the chamber. Inside the chamber, the light is passed to the FCR-7UVIR200-2-ME reflectance probe, connected on the other side of the vacuum feed-through. The reflected light collected by the reflection probe is passed through another vacuum feed-through to the AvaSpec-ULS2048-EVO spectrometer, which is outside of the vacuum chamber.
