A Game Changer for Push-Broom Hyperspectral Imaging
UAV-based push-broom hyperspectral imaging has long been recognised for delivering high-quality spectral data for remote sensing. Traditionally, however, there has been a significant delay between data acquisition and obtaining actionable insights. The standard approach involves flying the UAV over a target area, returning it to base, and then conducting extensive post-flight data processing—an acceptable timeline for some applications, but far from ideal.
The ultimate goal has always been real-time actionable data generation while the UAV is still in flight.
Now, Norsk Elektro Optikk AS (HySpex), in collaboration with NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, ReSe Applications LLC, and Prediktera AB, has achieved a breakthrough. They have developed an integrated hardware and software solution that revolutionises hyperspectral data processing.
This innovative system performs a combination of data processing including surface model generation, georeferencing, atmospheric correction, classification and 3D visualisation, delivering accurate, real-time results. These results can also be transmitted simultaneously to a ground station anywhere in the world via satellite link, enabling instantaneous decision-making.
This advancement opens up new possibilities for applications in mining, defence, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. Hyperspectral imaging can now be used to identify mineral compositions, assess forest or crop health, and monitor environmental or situational changes in real-time—paving the way for faster, more informed decision-making.
