Konica Minolta CA-410 Display Luminance Colorimeter

Next-Generation Display Colour Analyser & Luminance Meter

The Konica Minolta CA-410 is a luminance colorimeter that has been designed to measure and adjust the chromaticity and gamma characteristics of smartphone, tablet, television and other HDR displays across a wider luminance range than ever before. The CA-410 is the successor to the industry-standard CA-310 and is designed to measure the “spot” luminance and colour of the very latest generation of high dynamic range (HDR) displays.

The greater range of luminance and wider colour gamut of OLED devices created the need for the next level in measurement performance. Konica Minolta responded by developing the CA-410 which can accurately measure both the black-state of OLED displays as well as the maximum luminance, from 0.001 to 5,000 cd/m2 (using the CA-P427 probe).

Konica Minolta CA-410 Overview

The Konica Minolta CA-410 is a luminance colorimeter that has been designed to measure and adjust the chromaticity and gamma characteristics of smartphone, tablet, television and other HDR displays across a wider luminance range than ever before. The CA-410 is the successor to the industry-standard CA-310 and is designed to measure the “spot” luminance and colour of the very latest generation of high dynamic range (HDR) displays.

The greater range of luminance and wider colour gamut of OLED devices created the need for the next level in measurement performance. Konica Minolta responded by developing the CA-410 which features a wide measurement range, for example from 0.001 to 5,000 cd/m2 (using the CA-P427 probe).

The CA-410 is also capable of measuring both JEITA and contrast flicker. A new addition to the CA-410 is that it has an expanded frequency measurement range and adjustable frequency response.

CA-410 Configuration

The CA-410 comprises a CA-DP40 data processor with 7” colour display plus a selection of tristimulus measurement probes. The CA-DP40 features 10 ports allowing for multipoint measurements. The CA-DP40 is both portable and lightweight and can function on battery power alone for 3 hours. Measurement probes can either be connected directly to a computer or used with the CA-DP40 as required. Onboard diagnostic capabilities allow for immediate feedback on the performance of the device under test.

A range of interchangeable contact luminance probes is offered with the CA-410. Each is based upon tristimulus sensors.

  • “High Sensitivity” probes allow for measurements of the chromaticity and gamma of OLED displays for TVs and smartphones with a sensitivity threshold ranging from extreme ambient lighting conditions to intense luminance. The CA-VP410 and CA-VP427 feature measurement spots of 10 and 27mm diameter, respectively.

  • “Normal” probes are suitable for a variety of display types and are compatible with the previous-generation CA-310, providing seamless integration with existing systems. The CA-P410 and CA-P427 feature measurement spots of 10 and 27mm diameter, respectively. These probes are also available as high-brightness models, with the CA-P410H and CA-P427H capable of measuring up to 30,000 cd/m2.

  • “Mini” probes provide a similar performance to the CA-310 but in a more compact form-factor, proving ideal for those applications with restricted access. The CA-MP410 has a 10mm diameter measurement area, while the CA-MP410H can measure up to 30,000 cd/m2.

Measurement Range & Accuracy

The CA-410 provides guaranteed accuracy from ultra-low to high brightness with a dynamic range 25x wider than its direct predecessor meter, the CA-310 (when using the CA-P427 probe), with a measurement range from 0.001 to 5,000 cd/m². The chromaticity and gamma characteristics of HDR displays can be accurately measured and adjusted across a wide brightness range from ultra-low to high.

Enhanced XYZ tristimulus filters increase the spectral sensitivity of the CA-410 bringing it even closer than its predecessor to the colour-matching functions defined by CIE in 1931. The accuracy of chromaticity measurements has been further improved by calibrating the CA-410 with a reference light source that replicates the optical spectrum of current displays. As a consequence, users can more accurately measure and adjust the chromaticity and white balance of displays that have a wide colour gamut.

Other Important Information

PC software with a software development kit (SDK) is included as standard and gives users even wider versatility in terms of applications set up. It is possible to connect measurement probes directly to a PC and both the application software and the SDK support Windows® 7/10 as well as macOS®.

The CA-410 is capable of performing the following measurements:

Measurement (Units)

Application

Luminance in candelas per square meter (cd/m2)

Correlated colour temperature (CCT, in Kelvin) & Δuv

CIE tristimulus values (XYZ)

CIE 1931 chromaticity (xy)

CIE 1976 chromaticity (u’v’)

Dominant wavelength (nm)

Luminance, chromaticity and correlated colour temperature (CCT) from a defined measurement spot on displays, back-illuminated signs, vehicle instrument panels etc.

As standard, the CA-410 contact probes measure luminance from either a 10 or 27mm spot.

IMPORTANT NOTE: for the highest measurement accuracy with backlit controls and other small lit objects, the measurement spot must be positioned completely within the lit area of the target object. Should the measurement spot only just fit within the lit area, or overlap the surrounding unlit area, significant measurement errors will ensue. The CA-410 is NOT designed for measuring the luminance of small objects. Please check suitability for your application with Pro-Lite before purchasing the CA-410.
